Rupert Holmes, writer of Escape (The Piña Colada Song), made a surprise return to his birthplace on 22 August 2026 - performing live at the festival the town built in his honour.
The standout moment of Piña Colada Festival 2026 was one nobody in the crowd saw coming. Rupert Holmes, the singer and songwriter behind the 1979 hit Escape (The Piña Colada Song), travelled back to Northwich - the town where he was born in 1947 - and took to the main stage for a surprise live performance of the song that started it all.
Addressing the audience, he said: "Hello Northwich. My name is Rupert Holmes from Hemming Street, and I have come home." The moment, reported by Granada Reports and picked up across regional and national press, brought the festival full circle. What began in 2021 as a viral idea to celebrate Holmes's Northwich roots has grown into the UK's official Piña Colada Festival - and in 2026, the man himself finally came back to sing it.
Thousands filled the town centre on Saturday 22 August for the sixth annual event: a free, family-friendly day across Apple Market Place, Witton Quarter, and Barons Quay. The 2026 programme was the biggest yet, with an expanded main stage, live music, an urban beach on Witton Street, Sharlands Fun Fair at Barons Quay, a 100-performer samba parade, and three carnival processions featuring dancers, giant butterflies, and mascots Mr Colada and Mrs Salt.
