Deborah Jones Digital Archive

Digital archive for British artist Deborah Jones (1921–2012) - 80 artworks, biography timeline, bibliography, and press coverage preserving her Forever Friends legacy.

Deborah Jones Digital Archive

Project Overview

Deborah Jones was a self-taught British artist whose career spanned six decades - from wartime capstan lathe work at Bristol Aeroplane Company to theatre design at the Royal Opera House and Glyndebourne, and eventually global recognition as the creator of Hallmark's Forever Friends bear.

Digedtal built a dedicated digital archive to preserve and present her artistic legacy for researchers, collectors, and the public. The site catalogues 80 artworks with rich metadata, a 42-event biography timeline, bibliography, and curated press coverage - structured so each piece of content is discoverable and shareable.

The archive mirrors the Eddie Wolfram project in scope: a content-rich heritage platform that balances scholarly depth with an accessible browsing experience for non-specialist visitors.

The Challenge

  • Organising a large catalogue of artworks, life events, and press sources into a coherent navigable structure
  • Presenting complex biographical history - from WWII Bristol to West End theatre and Hallmark - without overwhelming casual visitors
  • Building a platform flexible enough for ongoing archival additions by estate administrators

The Results

  • 80 artworks catalogued with gallery views and detailed artwork pages
  • 42-event interactive biography timeline covering Jones's full life and career
  • Bibliography and press archive giving researchers direct access to source material
  • Mobile-first archive design suitable for public galleries, estates, and academic citation
